During WWII, The Germans saw what a Semi-auto rifle can do, based on the M-1 Garand, and the SVT-40. The German decided they needed a Semi-auto version of their own. In 1941 two companies submitted weapons, the Walther Factory, and the Mauser Factory. The rifles were accepted into Service in 1941 by the German military. These weapons were named the G41(W) and the G41(M). Both rifles failed miserably in combat. Two years later the German High command ordered that a better rifle be produced. The designers of Germany took the G41(W) and the G41(M) and merged them to make a ultimately better rifle. The Gew.43.

The Gew.43 operated by a gas system, where is takes the gas that the bullet uses. The gas enters a small hole in the barrel, travels up this hole, hits a piston which is connected to the bolt, and this in turn makes the bolt go back, and re-load itself. It uses a 10rd magazine, and chambers the 7.92x57mm Mauser round. Unfortunately this rifle was not used in large quantities and not very many were produced. Just another German experiment, except this one actually was produced, but in small numbers.
