The Mauser Rifle
Caliber: 7.92x57 mm Mauser in German service
In the Year of 1898 a new weapon was born. This weapon unlike any other ever seen before, offered ultimate reliability, extreme accuracy, and the makings of a wonderful rifle. This Rifle was used from 1898 to May of 1945. In this time almost Every country in Europe and many other continents came to use this weapon and produced millions of copies of this rifle. The Mauser Model 1898 Rifle.
The Mauser's reliability comes from the simple system it works on. . . The bolt. The bolt is a very simple mechanism that was refined by Paul Mauser from his, and his brothers design of the 1871/88 rifle. The bolt only has a few parts that can very easily be assembled, disassembled, and cleaned. The bolt has what is what I like to call a locking system. On the head of the bolt you will see two lugs. When the bolt in inserted into the weapon and the bolt is turned down, these lugs lock into the receiver, so that if for some unlikely reason the rifle exploded, the bolt would not fly into your head, in turn killing you. I myself have never seen this ever happen to a Mauser rifle, but I guess Paul Mauser wanted his uses to feel very safe while firing these Rifles, and he did a hell of a job doing it. To this day I still shoot both of my Military Mauser 98's and they work just like they did 60 and 90 years ago. . . perfectly.
The Rifle itself utilizes a 5rd internal double stack magazine. When the bolt is closed it is almost impossible to get dirt into the magazine because the bolt covers it. All this rifle ever needed was a simple cleaning every once in awhile, and even if you did not, it would still function perfectly, with extreme accuracy.
The accuracy comes from the weapon's ability to be very still when being Fired. It uses a 2 stage trigger, meaning if you pull back a bit on the trigger it will not fire, then while pulling on the trigger you will feel a slight stopping place, which will need more pressure than you used before, and the slightest bit of pressure will discharge. This type of Trigger greatly increases accuracy because during the process you, the pulling of the trigger does not affect the accuracy. The other thing that makes this weapon so accurate is it only has one moving part when the rifle goes off and the bullet in projected. . . the Firing pin.
All in all this weapon was a wonderful main battle rifle for the militaries of Europe during WWI, and a Great support rifle/main battle rifle for the German military in WWII.
